TITLE: Use of Collaborative Tools for Large-Scale Research Options

TIME/LOCATION:
Monday, March 9, 2:20PM-2:40PM
Location: International Ballroom IV-V

DESCRIPTION:
In the summer of 2008, NPS researchers utilized a collaboration tool used primarily for distance education to coordinate the activities of 45 researchers and two aircraft during a two-month research operation to study tropical cyclones in the Pacific. This operation involved representatives from nine countries, eight US universities, and six US government agencies. The general goal of the experiment was to improve weather model forecast skills by directly measuring tropical cyclone formation, intensification, structure, structure change, and tracking the complete life cycle of a typhoon.
